CENTCOM vs. AP Dispute Remains a Standoff (complete story)

It's tempting to write off, as some already have, the ongoing dispute between CENTCOM and the AP as just another MSM non-scandal stirred up by those crazy right-wing bloggers. For instance, take this raving nutjob from that notoriously conservative rag, the New York Times:

So Just Who Is Capt. Jamil Hussein?

Against the backdrop of the civil war, occupation, Baathist insurgency, sectarian conflict, and struggle against terrorists in Iraq, to borrow a few descriptors, in addition to the historic meeting between President Bush and Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki today, another battle is brewing. This one pits conservative bloggers and the military's communications machine against the Associated Press and the media at large. At the center of things is one police Capt. Jamil Hussein. Mr. Hussein was the primary source in an Associated Press wire-dispatch last Friday reporting that Shiite militiamen had "grabbed six Sunnis as they left Friday worship services, doused them with kerosene and burned them alive near Iraqi soldiers who did not intervene."

The one thing that remains unclear, though, is this: The Associated Press said in its story yesterday that Mr. Hussein "has been a regular source of police information for two years and had been visited by the AP reporter in his office at the police station on several occasions." The military, meanwhile, seems to suggest that Mr. Hussein is not a police officer, nor a civil servant in the employ of any Iraqi agency.

So who IS Mr. Hussein?

Good question. Despite statements from CENTCOM and an official spokesman for the Iraqi government, the AP is sticking with its initial answer:

As stated in AP's November 28 news story, this captain "has been a regular source of police information for two years and had been visited by the AP reporter in his office at the police station on several occasions."

"Navy Lieutenant Dean's statement seems to suggest that the news media should work solely from a government list of 'authorized sources.' But a free press cultivates a wide range of sources. That's what AP did in this case, as it always does."

Wrong. Dean did not argue, or even suggest, that the news media should work solely from approved sources. All he said was that the AP's source in this instance does not appear to be who he claims to be. Given our enemy's goal of driving us from Iraq by undermining domestic political support for our mission there, shouldn't the AP be making more of an effort to explain fully to its readers just who the hell this guy is?

My sources, (who have requested to remain anonymous),have told RovinsWorld that Capt Jamil Hussein is a figment of AP's imagination. Does this mean that AP has been fabricating storys (generated by Hussein) for over TWO YEARS? My request to AP would be----if the tooth fairy is real---prove it!

Iraqi Ministry Sets Up Team to Monitor News Reports

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Iraq's Interior Ministry said Thursday it had formed a special unit to monitor news coverage and vowed to take legal action against journalists who failed to correct stories the ministry deemed to be incorrect.Brig. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf, spokesman for the ministry, said the purpose of the special monitoring unit was to find "fabricated and false news that hurts and gives the Iraqis a wrong picture that the security situation is very bad, when the facts are totally different."

He said offenders would be notified and asked to "correct these false reports on their main news programs. But if they do not change those lying, false stories, then we will seek legal action against them."Khalaf explained the news monitoring unit at a weekly Ministry of Interior
briefing. As an example, he cited coverage by The Associated Press of an attack Nov. 24 on a mosque in the Hurriyah district in northwest Baghdad.

The AP threw in this paragraph at the end:

Under Saddam Hussein's regime, the government imposed censorship on local media and severely restricted foreign media coverage, monitoring transmissions and sending secret police to follow journalists. Those who violated the rules were expelled and in some cases jailed.

The reporter appears to be implying that this utterly banal PR initiative is a return to the bad old days of Saddam. Doesn't anyone at the AP read this stuff and think, "Wow. If we run something this hyperbolic, we're going to look really, really foolish." Apparently not. (h/t Mark E.)

While many here may say that this (monitor reporting staff) will be the first step in restricting news and events happening in Iraq, I would suggest it will be welcomed by many more who are sick and tired of reading propaganda supplied by the enemys of the Iraqi people, (and the U.S), and being told that everything reported is "the truth".

How many other times have these storys (produced by Capt Hussein) over the past TWO YEARS been nothing but fabrications? Has this single source been the primary source for what AP has supplied to the media across the world for the past two years? If Capt Hussein is nothing but an imposter (recruited by our enemys) who has supplied AP with nothing but total fabrications, how are we to judge the events that have transpired in Iraq for the past two years?

How many other "Capt Husseins" have been an intrical part of AP's reporting?

Can AP answer any of these questions before their credibility as a prominent news service ends up on another "please flush the toilet" sign in our port-ta-poddys?

Media Bias in Todays National and World Affairs

My very dear friend (of over 30 years) and I got into a heated debate the other night. The topics ranged from the situation in the middle east and then ventured into the political spectrum here at home. For close to two hours there were ebbs and tides of innuendoes, emotions, statements of fact, and (sometimes) out-right absurbities. When my friend (he preferred the moniker of "Highmoon") finally stated that there was no media bias, I went through the roof----almost literally. After I came down from my tirade, and gathered my emotions, I suggested we put Highmoon's statements concerning media bias to an online post and solicit other-wise calmer opinions. While my friend does not use the term MSM through-out our conversation, he does insinuate the term by his framed statement below.

How is the media perceived by our society today? This question would have to be divided into two separate notions----our own national media and the worlds media. While they are both intertwined in forming our opinions, please specify when you are framing your comments.

Highmoon says: "It is not a left (liberal) biased media, it a economic biased media."

Here's where my blood pressure rose (briefly) and I needed to frame his statement so I could understand where he was going with this. I also told him that I believed there was a definite liberal media bias and it is loaded with distortions and is agenda driven to destroy conservative thought and reasoning. I also told Highmoon that I felt the liberal medias bias played far too much of a part in framing the election process in our nation.

In replying to Highmoon's original statement I asked:

Rovin: "Should this be framed as a question or a statement of fact? I need to know if you believe there is no media bias.

Highmoon (from Highmoon Dances) says: "The media sells what people buy.The media that we financally support thru purchasing the products of advertisers, or the access to the media itself, sells us what we want to hear."

While this statement may have some truths unto itself, I felt that Highmoon was dancing a bit away from his original thought. I explained that while I do read the liberal media's "output", I rarely agree with what is written as truthful and unbiased. Case in point was the recent "world-wide" story released by the Associated Press that six sunnis were dragged out into the street, doused with kerosene, and burned alive. I put the emphasis on "world-wide" because over 90% of the worlds media printed this story as if it actually was factual, when it is still being disputed by many that this NEVER HAPPENED, AND WAS A TOTAL FABRICATION, created by AP through sources that to this day are still in question. Highmoon is not here now, and therefore can not defend or comment on the direction of this debate. So I will put it up here for discussion, and allow him to comment when a computer is available to him. In the meantime feel free to supply your input.

(note: I should include that our original 2 hour argument started with discussing the state of our involvement in the middle east and the ongoing debate of what should and can be done. Highmoon does believe that it was a total error for our President to remove Saddam Hussein from power. He also has expressed the belief that this "removal" was based only for the purpose of controlling the oil fields in the region to line the pockets of the Presidents "buddies". While I would agree to some extent that the control and the free flow of oil in the middle east is critical to our national and economic security, I do not believe that our President started a this war for the soul purpose of lining his buddies pockets. While this premise may be debatable, (and I think it has little merit), I would prefer that we keep this discussion (for the most part) on the media's involvement in national and world affairs, and how it has impacted all of us.)

Santa Claus Deemed Too 'Religious' for School Fundraiser

(CNSNews.com) - A Christmas-themed event to raise money at a public elementary school in Warwick, N.Y., has been altered to accommodate a parent's complaints that the program would illegally spotlight a "religious" figure - Santa Claus.

"Breakfast With Santa" has since been changed to "Winter Wonderland Breakfast," and -- in an effort to be inclusive of all beliefs -- the bearded one will now be joined at the Dec. 9 event by Frosty the Snowman.

Organizers made the changes after one parent charged that she and others in the community were offended that the Parent Teacher Association at the Sanfordville Elementary School was sponsoring a program geared toward one religion. (complete story)

"The attempt to question the existence of the known police officer who spoke to the AP is frankly ludicrous and hints at a certain level of desperation to dispute or suppress the facts of the incident in question."

We have conducted a thorough review of the sourcing and reporting involved and plan to move a more detailed report about the entire incident soon, with greater detail provided by multiple eye witnesses. Several of those witnesses spoke to AP on the condition that their names would not be used because they fear reprisals.

The police captain cited in our story has long been known to the AP reporters and has been interviewed in his office and by telephone on several occasions during the past two years.
He is an officer at the police station in Yarmouk, with a record of reliability and truthfulness. His full name is Jamil Gholaiem Hussein.

On Nov. 24, 2006, your organization published an article by Qais Al-Bashir about six Sunnis being burned alive in the presence of Iraqi Police officers. This news item, which is below, received an enormous amount of coverage internationally.

We at Multi-National Corps - Iraq made it known through MNC-I Press Release Number 20061125-09 and our conversations with your reporters that neither we nor Baghdad Police had any reports of such an incident after investigating it and could find no one to corroborate the story. A couple of hours ago, we learned something else very important. We can tell you definitively that the primary source of this story, police Capt. Jamil Hussein, is not a Baghdad police officer or an MOI employee. We verified this fact with the MOI through the Coalition Police Assistance Training Team.

Also, we definitely know, as we told you several weeks ago through the MNC-I Media Relations cell, that another AP-popular IP spokesman, Lt. Maithem Abdul Razzaq, supposedly of the city’s Yarmouk police station, does not work at that police station and is also not authorized to speak on behalf of the IP. The MOI has supposedly issued a warrant for his questioning.

I know we have informed you that there exists an MOI edict that no one below the level of chief is authorized to be an Iraqi Police spokesperson. An unauthorized IP spokesperson will get fired for talking to the media. While I understand the importance of a news agency to use anonymous and unauthorized sources, it is still incumbent upon them to make sure their facts are straight. Was this information verified by anyone else? If the source providing the information is lying about his name, then he ought not to be represented as an official IP spokesperson and should be listed as an anonymous source.

Unless you have a credible source to corroborate the story of the people being burned alive, we respectfully request that AP issue a retraction, or a correction at a minimum, acknowledging that the source named in the story is not who he claimed he was. MNC-I and MNF-I are always available and willing to verify events and provide as much information as possible when asked.

"CNN International and [Arabic television network] al-Jazeera are equally bad in their coverage of the situation in Iraq," Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani was quoted as telling a visiting group of Americans on Monday.

"When I was in the United States recently and read the negative news in the Washington Post, New York Times and in the network TV broadcasts, I even wondered if things had gotten so bad since I had left that I shouldn't return," he said.

Saddam Hussein has been convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging. The former Iraqi president was convicted by a Baghdad court for his role in the killing of 148 people in the mainly Shia town of Dujail in 1982.

Some feared the verdicts could exacerbate the sectarian violence that has pushed the country to the brink of civil war, after a trial that stretched over nine months in 39 sessions and ended nearly 3 1/2 months ago. Clashes immediately began Sunday in north Baghdad's heavily Sunni Azamiyah district. Elsewhere in the capital, celebratory gunfire rang out.

"This government will be responsible for the consequences, with the deaths of hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands, whose blood will be shed," Salih al-Mutlaq, a Sunni political leader, told the Al-Arabiya satellite television station.

Saddam and his seven co-defendants were on trial for a wave of revenge killings carried out in the city of Dujail following a 1982 assassination attempt on the former dictator. Al-Maliki's Islamic Dawa party, then an underground opposition, has claimed responsibility for organizing the attempt on Saddam's life.

In the streets of Dujail, a Tigris River city of 84,000, people celebrated and burned pictures of their former tormentor as the verdict was read.

The death sentences automatically go to a nine-judge appeals panel, which has unlimited time to review the case. If the verdicts and sentences are upheld, the executions must be carried out within 30 days.

"The message from President Saddam to his people came during a meeting in Baghdad this morning, just before the so-called Iraqi court issued its verdict in his trial," Khalil al-Dulaimi told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from Baghdad.

Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, took on CNN Friday evening during an interview with anchorman Wolf Blitzer.





Lynne Cheney is the epitomy of class and brains and beauty. Wolf and CNN took on a little more than they could chew in this interview and Lynne let 'em have it with "both barrels" (pun intended).

WB: And joining us now, the wife of the Vice President of the United States, Lynne Cheney, no stranger to CNN. Thanks very much for coming in.
LC: Thank you, Wolf, for having.
WB: And we’re going to talk about this excellent new book, Our 50 States: A Family Adventure Across America. This is a book that I recommend for all ages, and I see it’s already a bestseller.
LC: I’m very proud of this book. It was an effort of two years for Robin Glasser and me. And it was inspiring the whole time. It’s a story of the whole country, told by a family going on a road trip, and my grandchildren love it.
WB: I want to get to that, all that, but I want to pick your brain a little bit on news that’s happening right now, including your husband, the Vice President. He was interviewed earlier this week out in North Dakota, and he had this exchange with a radio talk show host. Listen to this:
Host: Would you agree a dunk in water is a no-brainer if it can save lives?
DC: Well, it’s a no-brainer for me, but for a while there, I was criticized as being the Vice President for Torture. We don’t torture. That’s not what we’re involved in.
WB: It made it sound, and there’s been interpretation to this effect, that he was in effect confirming that the United States used this waterboarding, this technique that has been rejected by the international community, that simulates a prisoner being drowned, if you will. And he was, in effect, supposedly confirming that the United States has been using that.
LC: Wolf, that is a mighty house you’re building on top of that molehill there, a mighty mountain. You know, this is a complete distortion. He didn’t say anything of the kind.
WB: Because of the dunking, you know, using the water and the dunking…
LC: Wolf, I understand your point. It’s kind of the point of a lot of people right now, to try to distort the administration’s position. And if you really want to talk about that, I watched the program on CNN last night, which I thought, it’s your 2006 voter program, which I thought was a terrible distortion of both the President and the Vice President’s position on many issues. It seemed almost straight out of the Democratic talking points, using phrases like domestic surveillance, when it is not domestic surveillance that anyone has talked about or ever done. It’s surveillance of terrorists. It’s people who have al Qaeda connections calling into the United States. So I think we’re in the season of distortion, and this is just one more.
WB: But there have been some cases where innocent people have been picked up, interrogated, held for long periods of time, then simply said never mind, let go. They’re let go.
LC: Well, are you sure these people are innocent?
WB: Well, they’re walking around free right now. Nobody’s arrested them.
LC: You made a point last night of a man who had a bookstore in London, where radical Islamists gathered, who was in Afghanistan when the Taliban were there, who went to Pakistan. I think that you might be a little careful before you declare this as a person with clean hands.
WB: You’re referring to the CNN Broken Government special…
LC: I certainly am.
WB: This was the one that John King reported on last night.
LC: You know, right there, right there, Wolf. Broken Government. Now what kind of stance is that? Here we are, we’re a country where we have been mightily challenged over the past six years. We’ve been through 9/11. We’ve been through Katrina. The President and the Vice President inherited a recession. We’re a country where the economy is healthy. That’s not broken. This government has acted very well. We’ve had tax cuts that are responsible for our healthy economy. We’re a country that was attacked five years ago. We haven’t been attacked since. What this government has done is effective. That’s not broken government. So you know, I shouldn’t let media bias surprise me, but I worked at CNN once. I watched the program last night…
WB: You were a co-host of Crossfire.
LC: …and I was troubled.
WB: All right. Well, that was probably the purpose, to get people to think, to get people to discuss these issues, because there are a lot of conservatives…
LC: All right, all right, Wolf. I’m here to talk about my book. But if you want to talk about distortion…
WB: We’ll talk about your book.
LC: Right. But what is CNN doing running terrorist tape of terrorists shooting Americans? I mean, I thought Duncan Hunter asked you a very good question, and you didn’t answer it. Do you want us to win?
WB: The answer, of course, is we want the United States to win. We are Americans. There’s no doubt about that. You think we want terrorists to win?
LC: Then why are you running terrorist propaganda?
WB: With all due respect, with all due respect, this is not terrorist propaganda.
LC: Oh, Wolf…
WB: This is reporting the news, which is what we do. We’re not partisan…
LC: Where did you get the film?
WB: We got the film…look, this is an issue that has been widely discussed, this is an issue that we reported on extensively. We make no apologies for showing that. That was a very carefully considered decision, why we did that. And I think, and I think, of your…
LC: Well, I think it’s shocking.
WB: If you’re a serious journalist, you want to report the news. Sometimes the news is good, sometimes the news isn’t so good.
LC: But Wolf, there’s a difference between news and terrorist propaganda. Why did you give the terrorists a forum?
WB: And if you put it in context, if you put it in context, that’s what news is. We said it was propaganda. We didn’t distort where we got it. We didn’t distort anything about it. We gave it the context. Let’s talk about another issue in the news, and then we’ll get to the book. The Democrats are now complaining bitterly in this Virginia race. George Allen using novels, novels that Jim Webb, his Democratic challenger, has written, in which there are sexual references. And they’re making a big deal out of this. I want you to listen to what Jim Webb said today in responding to this very sharp attack from George Allen.
LC: Now do you promise, Wolf, that we’re going to talk about my book?
WB: I do promise.
LC: Because this seems to me a mighty long trip around the merry-go-round.
WB: I want you to respond. This is in the news today, and your name has come up, so that’s why we’re talking about it. But listen to this:
James Webb: There’s nothing that’s been in any of my novels that in my view, hasn’t been either illuminating the surroundings, or defining a character, or moving a plot. I’m a serious writer. I mean, we can go and read Lynne Cheney’s lesbian love scenes if you want to, you know, get graphic on stuff.
LC: You know, Jim Webb is full of baloney. I have never written anything sexually explicit. His novels are full of sexually explicit references to incest, sexually explicit references…well, you know, I just don’t want my grandchildren to turn on the television set. This morning, Imus was reading from the novels, and it’s triple X rated.
WB: Here’s what the Democratic Party put out today, the Democratic Congressional Senatorial Campaign Committee. Lynne Cheney’s book featured brothels and attempted rape. In 1981, Vice President Dick Cheney’s wife, Lynne, wrote a book called Sisters, which featured a lesbian love affair, brothels, and attempted rapes. In 1988, Lynne Cheney wrote about a Republican Vice President who dies of a heart attack while having sex with his mistress. Is that true?
LC: Nothing explicit. And actually, that is full of lies. It’s not…it’s just absolutely not true.
WB: But you did write a book entitled Sisters.
LC: I did write a book entitled Sisters. This description…

LC: Wolf, I have nothing to explain. Jim Webb has a lot to explain.
WB: Well, he says he’s a serious writer and novelist, fiction writer. He was doing basically what you were doing.
LC: Jim Webb is full of baloney.
WB: We’ll leave it at that. Let’s talk a little bit about your book, Our 50 States: A Family Adventure Across America.
LC: You know, one of the reasons I wrote this book is because we spend so much time nowadays talking about things that are negative. And it’s not the fault of any particular segment of the society. But we have come to define news as bad news. And so our kids get a steady diet of this is wrong, the government is broken, the war isn’t working, the economy’s terrible. Even when those things aren’t true, our kids are getting a steady dose of negativity. What Robin and I wanted so much to do is to talk about what a wonderful country it is. We wanted to give our kids something positive. And I hope that’s what we’ve done in this book. It’s very, very pro-American. This is a book that’s very patriotic. There is no question about our view that this is the greatest country on the face of the Earth, and that is what we want kids to take away from it.
WB: The kids who read this book will learn a lot about the 50 states. That’s what it’s called…
LC: Yes.
WB: But a lot of the landmarks in those 50 states.
LC: Well, not just landmarks, but the vast variety and diversity of our culture. You know, we have everything from the preservation hall band in New Orleans to mariachi music in Texas, to the philharmonic in Boston. We’ve got all kinds of food. There’s a lovely little girl in this book, her name is Annie, and she writes back to her grandma again and again about the different foods she’s enjoying or not. In Boston, she says the beans are great, but she’s a little doubtful about the cod. So it’s not just about landmarks, it’s also about the kind of history and culture that I think kids will enjoy very much.
WB: And it is beautifully illustrated.
LC: Robin Glasser is a dear person, and a very talented individual. And I’m very happy to work with her.
WB: We can certainly disagree on what is news, what is serious news, but we can agree that this is a beautifully done book.
LC: Well, I appreciate that. Thank you, Wolf.
WB: How is your husband doing, because there’s always concern about his health.
LC: Well, I’m not sure why there’s always concern about his health. He’s been out on 140 campaigns. He’s raised forty-some million dollars for Republican candidates around the country. He’s been very busy. He has been serving the nation very well, as I think George Bush has been a really great leader for us during this time of some trials.
WB: We’re going to leave it right there. It was kind of you to come in.
LC: Thanks, Wolf.
WB: You came armed. I guess you knew what you wanted to do.
LC: Wolf, I am always prepared for you to ask questions that maybe aren’t quite fair, but they’re pretty tough.

George Will comments on the constant drone of economic whining despite actual near-record economic conditions.

And every election year — meaning every other year — brings an epidemic of dubious economic analysis, as members of the party out of power discern lead linings on silver clouds.

“Worst economy since Herbert Hoover,” John Kerry said in 2004, while that year’s growth (3.9 percent) was adding to America’s gross domestic product the equivalent of the GDP of Taiwan (the 19th-largest economy). Nancy Pelosi vows that if Democrats capture Congress they will “jump-start our economy.” A “jump-start ” is administered to a stalled vehicle.

But since the Bush tax cuts went into effect in 2003, the economy’s growth rate (3.5 percent) has been better than the average for the 1980s (3.1) and 1990s (3.3). Today’s unemployment rate (4.6 percent) is lower than the average for the 1990s (5.8) — lower, in fact, than the average for the past 40 years (6.0). Some stall.

Economic hypochondria, a derangement associated with affluence, is a byproduct of the welfare state: An entitlement mentality gives Americans a low pain threshold — witness their recurring hysteria about nominal rather than real gasoline prices — and a sense of being entitled to economic dynamism without the frictions and “creative destruction” that must accompany dynamism. Economic hypochondria is also bred by news media that consider the phrase “good news” an oxymoron, even as the U.S. economy, which has performed better than any other major industrial economy since 2001, drives the Dow to record highs.

The Jack No. 2 well, in deep water 170 miles southwest of New Orleans, recently discovered a field with perhaps 15 billion barrels of oil — a 50 percent increase in proven U.S. reserves. This news triggered a gusher of journalistic gloom: More oil means more woe — a reprieve for that enemy of humanity, the internal combustion engine, and more global warming, more air pollution, more highway fatalities, more suburban sprawl.

The recent 20 percent decline of the cost of a barrel of oil, from a nominal record of $78.40 (which, adjusting for inflation, was well below the 1980 peak of $92 in 2006 dollars), has produced an 81-cent decline in the average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline in 70 days. For consumers, that is akin to a tax cut of more than $81 billion.

President Bush’s tax cuts were supposed to cause a cataract of red ink. In fiscal 2006, however, federal revenue as a share of GDP was 18.4 percent, slightly above the post-1962 average of 18.2. And the federal budget deficit was $247.7 billion, just 1.9 percent of the $13.1 trillion GDP. That is below the average for the 1970s (2.1), 1980s (3.0) and 1990s (2.2).

It is said that employee compensation has been stagnant. But to tickle that bad news from the statistics you must treat “compensation” as a synonym for wages and then ignore the effect of taxation on individuals’ well-being.

Kevin Hassett and Aparna Mathur of the American Enterprise Institute, writing in National Review, say annual wage growth since 2000 has been 0.6 percent, but the annual increase in real hourly compensation, including benefits — and if you do not include them, why are they called benefits ? — has been 1.3 percent. And taxes — particularly those paid by middle-class families with children — have declined substantially.

Wal-Mart 'Has Declared War' on Dems, Union Foe Charges

"Rather than embrace our positive vision for a better America, Wal-Mart has officially declared war on the Democratic Party, elected leaders and every American who believes we should pay workers a living wage, provide affordable health care to all, protect American jobs and keep America safe," Paul Blank, campaign director for WakeUpWalMart.com, said in a statement Friday.

The very concept of free enterprise and a free market are being attacked by these unions and by association the democratic party. Paul Blank and his minions at WakeUpWalMart have no clue how a free market works in a free society. The very concept that Wal Mart created by purchasing goods in volume, and providing entry-level wages to it's workers allows consumers to purchase these goods at affordable prices.

For any institution (government, unions, or a democratic party) to force (mandate) wage scales and benefit packages upon any free market business is an assault on the free market enterprises that we have enjoyed for over two hundred years. This assault borders on socialist/communist ideals that threatens our very core values of a free market.

And don't be fooled by their intentions. The ONLY remedy for these forced polices is to stick it to you, the consumer, by paying more and getting less. The results are simple. Fewer stores, far less employment, lower tax revenues for the local community's, and yes, we will all pay more for those lost revenues.

Sure sounds UN-DEMOCRATIC to me.

Mr. Blank and his co-horts would like you to believe that these mandated wage and benefit increases are for the good of all Walmart employees. What they won't tell you is YOU (the consumer) will foot the bill. The headline suggest that Wal Mart has declared war on the unions and the democratic party. I submit to you that it has been the the other way around. The democratic party and their always faithful unions have declared war on Wal Mart, and Wal Mart (and you, the consumer) are fighting back.

Let the free market remain free. Or we all lose.

Legend to quit competitive golf at age 77

SPRING, Texas (AP) -- Arnold Palmer tearfully said it was time to stop playing competitive golf after withdrawing from a Champions Tour event early in the first round.

The 77-year-old Palmer hit two balls into the water on the fourth hole Friday, then said he was withdrawing because of a sore lower back. He continued playing with his threesome of Lee Trevino and John Mahaffey but did not keep score the rest of the round.

Palmer said he finished the round because he owed it to his fans.

Billionaire liberal financier George Soros, who spent millions of his fortune trying to oust President Bush in 2004, yesterday said he hopes to stay out of politics from now on. "In the future, I'd very much like to get disengaged from politics," Soros said at a Council on Foreign Relations meeting on the Upper East Side. "I'm interested in policy and not in politics."

So does this mean we can stop tracking all the money Georgie? This would be one of the biggest blows to the democratic party since they put Howard Dean in charge of the money-machine, but don't expect Soros to exit politically. His dollars just may not be so transparent. And how does George intend to go about influencing policy?

Woodward Watch

DAVID E. SANGER at the Al-New York Times gets to throw the first punch at the president in a preview of Bob Woodward's book of horrors:

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 The White House ignored an urgent warning in September 2003 from a top Iraq adviser who said that thousands of additional American troops were desperately needed to quell the insurgency there, according to a new book by Bob Woodward, the Washington Post reporter and author. The book describes a White House riven by dysfunction and division over the war.

The warning is described in State of Denial, scheduled for publication on Monday by Simon & Schuster. The book says President Bush's top advisers were often at odds among themselves, and sometimes were barely on speaking terms, but shared a tendency to dismiss as too pessimistic assessments from American commanders and others about the situation in Iraq.

The only people in a "State of Denial" are liberal minions such as BW, and media whores who deny that we are in a war. A war in which our enemy has no rules, no uniforms, and so filled with hatred and jeolousy of our prosperous (insert economic news) love for life.

Side-note: Because BW says it's true, then it must be gospel. Right! This ought to keep the left and the MSM busy for weeks publishing excerpts from Woody's book, while he is laughing all the way to the bank. Power-Brokers Dinner

President Bush had dinner last night with the two leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan who haven't been seen as "friends", but the two do share a common goal of stamping out terrorism in their respective countrys.

"We're proud to have you here, Mr. President," Mr. Bush said to Gen. Musharraf, who replied quietly, "My pleasure." "Proud to have you here, Mr. President," Mr. Bush said to Mr. Karzai. "Thanks very much," the Afghan leader said. Mr. Bush offered words of praise for the two leaders, who have been engaged in an increasingly belligerent exchange of words.

Joining the three leaders at dinner -- billed an "iftar," a meal that breaks the dawn-to-dusk fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, because Gen. Musharraf and Mr. Karzai are Muslim -- were Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley. The two nations' ambassadors to the U.S. also attended.

If anything, the dinner and the appearance of the three leaders on the front porch of the White House is showing the world that President Bush has some serious allies in the middle east. With the president and his "other guest" attending, one would also assume leaders of our nation were also taking notice. Hey, look, the war-monger can use diplomacy. But don't expect the MSM or the nutty left to notice that.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld addressed the annual Keeper of the Flame award dinner Wednesday night at a black-tie affair in Union Station's East Hall. Mr. Rumsfeld reminded the several hundred guests, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Peter Pace, and NATO commander Gen. Jim Jones about Winston Churchill's remark after the successful evacuation of British troops from the continent at Dunkirk. "Churchill said in the Parliament very simply, 'Wars are not won by evacuations.' And we need to remember that today," Mr. Rumsfeld said. "They're not won by retreat or wishful thinking. They're won by determination, they're won by understanding the nature of the enemies we face, and the consequences, I would say the dire consequences of failing to understand them or failing to defeat them." Mr. Rumsfeld said he met recently with former British Prime Minister Lady Margaret Thatcher, who he noted had been criticized for her outspoken advocacy of "peace through strength," which was the motto for the evening's host, the Center for Security Policy. The dinner honored Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican and chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, along with five veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

WHAT IF?.........

What if, one day, all of the Islamist, Jihadist, Hamas, Hezbollas, and all other Moslems who murder innocent infidels in the name of Allah, just woke up one morning and decided to take the day off? That's right! Take the day off from killing, just went to morning prayer and decided, "I don't feel like bloodshed and mayhem today, so I'll just take the day off." Would Allah be pissed? You know Allah, the father of Islam, the religion of peaceful, accepting, tolerant, and loving ways. Would Allah say "No, you may not take a day off from suicide, murder, and mayhem." "You must kill every day of your life here." "Death of the infidels must be your mission in life and there are NO days off." Would Allah understand if many were so tired of the bloodshed, they just needed a day off?

Better yet, what if all party’s in this struggle, the west, middle east, indeed all regions that wake up in the morning with a weapon beside them just decided to take the day off? Call it a "Life Day". One day, across the whole world, everyone chooses life over death. And, if this one day worked out, everyone decided to try it for a whole week-end. Remember not so long ago when our family’s used to take the weekend off and go do something positively delightful together? Our family used to drive fifteen miles up to Folsom Lake and go swimming, catch perch and bass, and sit around the camp spot and play cards or just read a book. Oh, yeah, we also decided not to kill that whole weekend. Yep, left the weapons at home and simply made up our minds that this would be a "no kill weekend".

I really miss those weekends.

Conservatives Out-breeding Liberals

If you're a liberal, here's what you can do to make Karl Rove a very happy man: Get yourself a labradoodle. Or any other kind of dog, for that matter. Even a cat will do. Just don't have children.

That way you'll maintain a fertility gap that already is invisibly working to guarantee the political right will outnumber the left by an ever-growing margin. Over the past three decades, conservatives have been procreating more than liberals -- continuing to seed the future with their genes by filling bassinets coast to coast with tiny Future Republicans of America.

Take a randomly selected sample of 100 liberal adults and 100 conservative adults. According to an analysis of the 2004 General Social Survey -- a bible of data for social scientists -- the liberals would have had 147 kids, while the conservatives would have had 208. That's a fertility gap of 41 percent. Even adjusting for other variables like age and income, there is a gap of 19

Rules of Engagement

While we, as a nation, continue to soften our resolve with how we fight against an ideology of terrorist that HAVE AND ABIDE BY NO RULES, and wear no uniforms, represent no country, murder the innocent by suicidal means, our "leaders" in our legislative branch of our government are playing political games on how these terrorist are dealt with when captured. That these same terrorist who torture and slit the throats of their captured should be treated
with the same dignity and rules of the Geneva Convention is totally ridiculous and insane. The argument that these directives will some how denigrate how this nation is perceived by the rest of the world is also benign.

Is setting a standard by which we deal with an unrelenting ideology wrong? If we cannot or choose not to set these standards, who does ?The ability to interrogate and prosecute these madmen who abide by NO RULES is being marginalized by our leaders in the Senate. Mr. Warner, McCain, and Graham are so worried about the worlds view on how these terrorist are treated, (and how they are perceived by their electorate), these people are bowing to the political correctness that would re-elect them at the peril of our own destiny.

What part about being at war isn't understood? Is it possible we have become a nation that has not the fortitude to prosecute this war to win? Will sixty year old rules of engagement created by those who wore uniforms be the guiding lines we must abide by today? The complicated framework of how we resolve this may be the deciding factor on how we defeat our enemies. Or how they defeat us.

Or do we just let the liberal lawyers run this war?

Wow! Talk about people who feel free to make criticisms of something they haven’t seen. As someone who has previewed it, who is neither a liberal OR conservative I must say it gave a different view. Shame on you all for the judgement you feel so free to pass along. So the liberal (and yes it is liberal) media has rogue among them who chooses to show something from the other side… yes boycott them… but remember that is about all you should be calling for in your reaction because after all… Farenheit 911 etc has time and time again shown the other side and no one called for censorship. Use your power of the dollar… don’t watch, but don’t bitch if you don’t watch it

I agree with most all of you! Never. ever, ever watch ABC again. This will drive them into the sewer and they will have to accept money from the same advertising entities that do so well on Fox cable. By god, them damn ABC conservatives will… actually prosper. Must be some damn Carl Rove conspir…wait, got tin foil in my mouth, hurts fillings….there. better… and did I mention that Dick Cheney is reported to own a TV that will actually be able to pick up this ABC illegal transmission? We all know that this conspir……wait, more tinfoil…. that’s better….we all know that Dick Cheney will use this undocumentery as an excuse to launch cruise missiles on the Clinton Library.
